Understanding How Electric Scooters Work

An electric scooter or pedal scooter is usually a stand-up electric scooter powered primarily by an electric battery. Often classified as a unique form of mini-mobility, these electric scooters are normally designed with a tall backboard on which the rider sits. Electric powered scooters were first made by Autoped starting in 1915. Since then there have been many different manufacturers including Super Rabbit, Beep, Electra, and more.

Why would you want an electric scooter? Simply put, they are great fun and very efficient. They provide you with the freedom to go pretty much anywhere without having to worry about gas money or parking. Most electric scooters work off of 12-volt batteries but some models can run off of low voltage batteries. What does this mean to you? In most cases, they are smaller in size and weigh less.

Electric scooters come in two basic types: electric (pedal) and gasoline (throttle). To give you a little information, both types use similar technology to create the power that gives the rider the ability to go over rough terrain and negotiate turns. The difference in how these types operate usually comes from the type of motor used. Specifically, there are two main categories: Brushless motors and DC motors.

Brushed motors are new to the electric scooter market and are becoming more popular. These kinds of motors create less friction, which means smoother travel over rougher surfaces. Some of the latest brushed motor designs use high speed brushed drive systems and are known for being extremely durable. They typically use brushless technology along with multiple speed and transmission capabilities.

The third major difference is the kind of battery the scooter uses. Traditional scooters use a variety of different types of batteries to power them including lead acid, deep cycle, and deep cycle batteries. Lead acid batteries have a high energy storage capacity but suffer from life-span issues and have to be charged very frequently. Deep cycle batteries are disposable, which means that users need to replace them every couple of years while a deep cycle battery only needs to be replaced once.

Both throttle and clutch systems on electric scooters work in much the same way as their internal combustion counterparts. The difference lies in how the rider moves the vehicle and the amount of power that is generated. In order to understand how the electric scooter drives, it’s important to know that a throttle basically allows the rider to adjust the amount of power generated. On most models, this control is done by moving the foot pedal to either the left or right. In addition to giving the rider more control over the vehicle, a throttle also lets riders increase the speed of the vehicle, which is good if the weather conditions require increased speeds.

Clutch systems use two independent brakes. A clutch system on an electric scooter works like the clutch system on a car. With a clutch system, a small lever on the side of the scooter allows the rider to increase or decrease the amount of braking force. If you need more stopping force, simply increase the lever and the amount of braking will increase.

The final major difference between traditional gas scooters and electric scooters is how they fold up. Electric scooters generally fold up easily because they don’t have a gas tank or combustion chamber. Instead, the gas engine pops out from underneath the seat of the scooter. This makes it easier to fold up the scooter for storage and transport. Gas powered scooters can’t fold up very easily because their fuel source is in the tail pipe.
